Cross Country Earns Split in Dual with Rocky

BILLINGS, Mont. – On a sunny but cool morning at Riverfront Park, the Montana State Billings cross country team earned a split against cross-town rival, Rocky Mountain College. The women took the victory over the Battlin Bears, scoring 23 points to RMC’s 37, while the men dropped their race, scoring 31 points to the 24 by RMC.
On the women’s side, Lisa Minnehan led the way for MSUB, completing the 3.1 mile course in 19:22 for a second place finish behind RMC’s Amber Watson (18:50). Leah Thompson was third for MSUB with a 20:34, while Mary Owen (20:41), Katie Thiel (20:48), Kristin Yeley (20:53) and Sarah Jackson (21:09) finished fifth through eighth.
The men’s team was led by Daniel Lombardi who finished in a time of 16:21 for a second place finish behind Cesar Mireles of Rocky with a 16:04. Tyson Vanderby finished second for MSUB, fifth overall, with a 16:59, just ahead of teammate Travis Buttelman with a 17:06. Mark Bolt crossed the line in eighth with a 17:09, while Travis Hutchinson (17:24), Ryan Blomback (17:35) and Taylor Canfield (17:43) rounded out the scoring for MSUB, finishing 10th through 12th respectively.
The cross country team will be back in action next weekend as it travels to Rapid City, S.D. for the South Dakota Tech Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12, starting at 10 a.m.
